pH of WATER
pH of water is one of the fundamental characteristic of water that must not be ignored, pH of water gives us a lot of information about water, in any laboratory analysis of water that do not involve pH is practically incomplete, before we go further we like to look at the definition of pH, what is pH? In chemistry, pH is defined as the scale acidity or alkalinity of a water based solution, pH measures how acidic or how basic a water based solution is, the pH is a scale of 1-14, 1-7 or below 7 is considered acidic while 7-14 or above 7 is considered basic while 7 is considered as neutral.

The formular for pH is
pH =-log[H⁺] this mean pH is the negative base 10 logarithm
Now that we have known what is pH, let us progress on this topic what is the pH of water? The pH of pure water is 7, neutral, this is ideal for any drinking water, with an acceptable range of 6.5 -8.5 according to WHO and EPA standard on drinking water. But, most underground water and other sources of water do not meet this neutral pH of 7 due to some environment factors, in order to correct this abnormality, many substances have been used to improve the pH of water.
pH of water do not only have a health concern but also a major concern to those treating water in large quantity, especially those using chlorine as their major disinfectant, because at a pH level lower than 7.54 chlorine react to give hypochlorous acid [HOCL] which is a very strong disinfectant but, at water pH above 7.54 hypochlorous loses a proton and become hypochlorite[OCL] with a negative charge which is a weak disinfectant, but, at a pH of 7.54 both are present in the same proportion.
What is the health effect of pH of water, when we drink water that is either too acidic or too alkaline is harmful according environmental protection agency (EPA). Water with high pH usually have a slippery feel, aesthetic effect may be bitter, on the other hand, water with low pH value can corrode plumbing and leach metal. It could also results in nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, kidney disease, liver disease and nervous system problems
It is very good and beneficial to make sure our drinking water is not too acidic or too alkaline, if we cannot achieve pH of 7, we at least achieve a pH between 6.5-8.5 as recommended by WHO and EPA
